Description
HISTORY
Begun in 1996, Broadbent Madeira was inspired by Bartholomew Broadbent’s
father, Michael Broadbent, who called Madeira his “desert island wine,” and
who played a crucial role in sourcing the wines and establishing the blends.
Bartholomew Broadbent, who spent more than a decade reintroducing
Madeira to the U.S. market, was determined to create a line of Madeiras to
compete with the best in the world.
VITICULTURE/VINIFICATION
Vines planted in terraces to overcome the natural slope of the land. On
the north coast protected with hedges in order to protect the vineyards
from the sea winds. Vineyards facing south and east depending on your
location. Grapes are sourced from 10 to 20 year old vines in volcanic soil
in the areas of São Vicente and Arco de São Jorge, Câmara de Lobos,
Estreito de Câmara de Lobos and Calheta. Manual harvest began in
September, following Espalier and Latada (part of the Arnsburger) vine
training system. Rigorous grape quality selection, The grapes are totally
destemmed, crushed and pressed. Fermentation is carried at controlled
temperature in stainless steel tanks (100%). Before alcoholic fermentation
the must was clarified, statically at 10°C for 24 hours. Stabilized and filtered
before bottling.
