Description
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC “Mammut” is a great structured red wine. The grapes, 100% Montepulciano, are carefully selected and harvested in mid October. Then, only the free-run must gets pressed and winemaking takes place at a controlled temperature. After malolactic fermentation, which grants a particular fineness and maturation, the wine need to be aged in 5 hl tonneau (a particular kind of oak barrels) for 15 months. Bottle refinement lasts at least 6 months.
Cascina del Colle is a leader in the region of Abruzzo, with all the vineyards that are all south and southeast facing. The “Mammut’ bottling is 100% Montepulciano and is named after the archaeological discovery of a Mammoth tusk in the second half of the 1960s at the point where the current company “La Cascina del Colle” was built. Hence the idea of a wine that was representative, powerful and majestic.

The nose is balanced but incisive, with tart and sweet aromas of blackberries and black cherries, as well as a strong, superspicy, almost smoky blend of earth and herbs. That balance continues on the palate, which has an additional contrast between indulgent chocolate and firm, unintimidated tannins. — Danielle Callegari
