What’s the deal with all the ducks? Joao Pato (Duckman) is the wine project of Maria Pato. The Pato family is one of the most important winemaking families in all of Portugal. Like her sister and father before her, Maria has managed to craft her own unique winemaking identity using the same indigenous Portuguese grapes her family is known for championing. For her own project she named it after her grandfather, Joao, who initially set the family on the winemaking path. Oh, and Pato happens to be the Portuguese word for duck.
In the Bairrada region where she makes wine, Baga is king. What’s more, it’s the grape she and her family have hung their hat on and brought to international attention. Baga can make rich reds that rival fine Nebbiolo, but is also versatile enough to make crunchy, fruit and acid driven glou glou wine.
