Description
Rosso di Montalcino is a wine produced in the
Montalcino area of Tuscany, known primarily for the production of Brunello (the local name for the Sangiovese grape). Rosso di Montalcino differs from the latter primarily in the length of aging. It is, in fact, a young wine, which is marketed starting the year following the harvest. This wine is produced on the
Tenuta Pian delle Vigne of the
Antinori family, which has a centuries-old tradition of winemaking. The Montalcino area is characterized by an extremely mild and temperate climate that allows the grapes to ripen earlier than in nearby areas such as Chianti. Rosso di Montalcino boasts the Controlled Designation of Origin. It is produced exclusively with
Sangiovese grapes, a
grape variety that is extremely widespread in Tuscany. The vineyards are located at an altitude between 130 and 150 meters above sea level and have a predominantly southeast exposure. The soils are predominantly clayey and calcareous, with a rich gravel composition. The grapes are harvested in mid-September and, after destemming and gentle pressing, are transferred to stainless steel tanks where alcoholic fermentation takes place at a temperature of approximately 25°C. Maceration lasts 8-10 days. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is transferred to large wooden barrels. Here, the aging process begins, lasting approximately 12 months.
