Bud break began at the beginning of April, ahead of
historical averages. The weather at bloom, was hot with
dry winds. The key factor of the vintage, however, came at
the end of June, when a heat dome descended upon the
Walla Walla Valley and all of the west coast. It
shattered all previous temperature records.
Temperatures did cool down in September and October,
allowing for extended hang time, resulting in ripe,
beautifully structured fruit.

Truly, my favorite “In the Rocks” I have ever had the pleasure
of creating. I am simply over the moon with this wine. It has
all the elements traditionally found in this wine but it’s
simply amped up!! The wine screams out of the glass with
apricot, ripe plum, black licorice, crème bruleè, and loads of
BBQ notes of juicy brisket, Texas ribs, and rosemary butter
over a Wagyu steak. This wine is powerful, with elegant
tannins and a finish that goes on for what seems like forever.
The complexity now is amazing and over time I believe that the
2021 “In the Rocks” is so hauntingly good it will send shivers
down your spine.
