Description
Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri Sassicaia is an absolute excellence, the only wine in Italy to have earned a specific DOC for identification:
Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC. This wine, with its enveloping, intense, and exciting
character, is a true
oenological legend. It is the most famous in the world as it perfectly embodies the balance in terms of
body and
complexity. It is produced within the
Tenuta San Guido, which with its unique and impervious soil, with limestone formations and a high stony content (hence the name
“sassicaia”) has created the perfect conditions for this oenological treasure to flourish. The name of the estate where
Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri Sassica is produced derives from
San Guido della Gherardesca, who lived in the 13th century. It is a historic winery in the
Bolgheri area, located along the Etruscan coast, in the Maremma region. The idea of planting vineyards in this area originated with
Mario Incisa della Ricchetta who, fascinated by
Bordeaux, dreamed of creating his own classy wine in 1920. This Bordeaux-style red is made with 85%
Cabernet Sauvignon and 15%
Cabernet Franc grapes. The
Sassicaia harvest takes place in August and is vinified in temperature-controlled steel with approximately two weeks of maceration on the skins. Following various pumping overs and délestages, the wine is then aged in oak barrels for 2 years before being left in the bottle for 6 months.
