Description

Vintage In spite of the drought and the South Napa earthquake, vintners are using words like quality, depth of flavor and excellent to describe their expectations for the 2014 vintage in Napa Valley. The 2013/2014 winter was one of the driest on record in California and rainfall totals in the Napa Valley were approximately half of normal. Heavy rains in late February and early March gave a much needed drink of water to the vines as about to begin bud break. Spring was warm allowing vintners and growers to save water for irrigation rather than using it for frost protection. While the vines used for high quality wine production generally dont need much water, a benefit of the drought is that berry sizes are typically smaller and have more concentrated flavors, which many winemakers believe contributed to the overall quality of this years harvest.Winemaking The fruit for this wine comes from both our sustainably farmed vineyard in Rutherford, and from local Napa Valley vineyards. Each vineyard block was harvested and made into an individual lot representing that block. The wines were pressed off the skins from 10 to 28 days after crushing. Blending generally takes place between January and April of the year following harvestAging Aged for 18 months in American oakbarrels 35%new barrelsTasting Notes Bright blackberry, red plum, and raspberry fruit with notes of cranberry, black tea, spice and coriander seed. Luscious and balanced, with toasty oak and a long finish. – Honig
