”Beautifully pure, focused, and complex, our 2007 Estate Zinfandel offers a decadent nose of bright boysenberry fruit and anise. The aromatics build with flavors of ripe blueberries, rich chocolate, and toasty oak. Extended aging in small French, Hungarian, and American oak cooperage balances the wines silky, elegant texture with layers of toast and vanilla.WINEMAKING 2007 was a great vintage for Zinfandel, with heat in late August and early September that pushed the fruit to ripe, rich flavors. This is one of the more voluptuous vintages of the new century.To create this wine, rapid chilling of the fruit at crush and a three day cold soak started the process off with very nice color extraction. We then warmed the fruit and added select strains of yeast to ferment the juice. Pumpovers started out aggressive early on and became shorter and gentler late in the fermentation process. The wine is aged in small French, Hungarian, and American oak barrels 26% new for 16 months, followed by bottling in April 2009.FOOD PAIRING French dip or a barbecued beef sandwich.TASTING COMMENTS One of the great resources of Kunde Family Estate is our old-vine Shaw Vineyard, located in the hills in the middle of the Estate. We use this fruit not only for our Reserve bottling, but it makes for a dynamic addition to the Estate Zin, making up nearly 40% of the finished wine. Kundes red volcanic soil creates a boysenberryscented, elegant wine that is still plenty bold and ripe to remind you that this is definitely Zinfandel, after all!
